Who am I?

Everyone has a writing style. I am 50 years old and in march 2023 I realised. I had lost mine. I don't know exactly how that came about. It's not like I woke up one morning and thought,

“Hey, how is that possible? Where have I left my writing style?”

No, if only that were true. Then I would sit on the edge of my bed, stretch my arms, open the window and ask myself where I left it the day before. After I got dressed and finished my breakfast I would walk to my desk. Turn on the computer and see if I saved it somewhere. I would then start the last saved file:

'In the context of patient-oriented care, it is important that a doctor uses his or her listening skills and conversation techniques in the consulting room to find out the motivating factors in the patient, which could lead to the adoption of a healthier lifestyle.'

If I had read this sentence, I would have cried out with joy:

“Yes, writing style there you are again!! A very long, unclear sentence with a lot of content but no real message..”

It was just a bad dream. I can move on. At least that's what I would think. Now I know better.

How did I know that I have lost my writing style?

Because until now I didn't know I lost it! And if you don't know you lost something, you don't look for it. I've been writing since I am eight years old. Starting with a diary, then short stories. Later they became papers, essays and thesis. Writing became a daily habit. So in the end I made writing my profession. I wrote pieces as a social policy advisor. I thrived on writing long and complicated annual reports, project plans, evaluations, training guides, handbooks, inspection reports. I had been doing that for almost twenty years.

Until January 2021. You can read in the post below how it started..

Everyone has their own writing style! So have you!

In my quest to find back my writing style I delve into the past. A language deficiency in my childhood, books, unexpected encounters, sources of inspiration. I find out that a writing style has a deeper meaning.

Your personal writing style says something about who you are.
